How to appear in Google AI Overviews
AI Overviews sit above the results and answer the query outright, citing a handful of sources. Those sources are often not the pages ranking beneath them, so a page can hold position one and be absent from the overview covering the same query. Inclusion is decided at retrieval, which rewards pages that answer a sub-question completely and cleanly.
Does ranking first get me into the AI Overview?
No. The overview draws from its own retrieval pass, and the cited sources frequently differ from the ranked results below. Ranking helps because it correlates with being retrievable, but it is not the selection mechanism.
This is the finding that surprises teams reviewing their first report, and it is worth checking on your own queries before accepting anyone's advice. Search a term you rank first for and read which sources the overview actually cites.
What kind of page gets cited in an overview?
Pages that answer one sub-question completely, in a form that can be quoted without rewriting. Short question-shaped headings, direct answers underneath, tables and definition lists.
Overviews compress hard. A page that requires three paragraphs of setup before the answer arrives will be summarised rather than quoted, and a summary loses the attribution that makes the citation worth having.
What to do about it
Move the answer above the context. Preamble occupies the slot the engine would otherwise lift.
A query expands into sub-questions about price, compliance, alternatives and fit. One page covering all of them satisfies more of the answer than five pages covering one each.
Structured rows extract cleanly and survive compression, which is why comparison formats appear so heavily in citation sets.
Specific figures with a date give the engine something quotable. Vague claims get paraphrased into someone else's sentence.
AI Overviews and AI Mode are not the same surface
Both are Google, both are Gemini-powered, and they retrieve from different pools. A brand can be well represented in one and absent from the other, so treating them as a single target produces a misleading read.
If you measure only one, measure the one your buyers actually use, and say which one your number refers to.
Common questions
No public one. Any tool reporting on them collects through licensed search data rather than an official feed, which is a fair thing to ask a vendor about.
Schema helps a crawler understand the page but does not buy inclusion. The determinant is whether your passage answers the sub-question better than the alternatives retrieved alongside it.
Covers the work that changes whether an engine names you.
