What is Generative Engine Optimization?

Your buyers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions they used to type into Google — and they get one answer instead of ten links. GEO is the discipline of earning your place in that answer.
DEFINITION
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of measuring and improving how AI engines represent your brand in their answers — by shaping the sources those engines read and cite: your own content, reviews, communities and editorial coverage. Closely related: AEO (answer engine optimization), often used interchangeably.

How an engine builds an answer

Understanding the pipeline explains every GEO tactic. When a buyer asks "what's the best CDP for a B2B SaaS team without a data function?", the engine doesn't look that phrase up. It runs a process:
01 · FAN OUT
The question expands into 30+ hidden sub-queries: “CDP comparison”, “CDP no data team”, “CDP pricing”…
02 · RETRIEVE
Each sub-query pulls candidate sources — 68% of which aren't in Google's top 10 for the original phrase.
03 · SELECT
The engine weighs trust: reviews, communities, comparisons, docs. A handful of citations survive.
04 · SYNTHESIZE
One answer is written from those citations. The brands inside it win the deal's first shortlist.
Every GEO lever targets one of those stages: tracking the right prompts (fan-out), being present on the pages engines retrieve (retrieve), earning trust on the sources they prefer (select), and giving them clear, quotable claims to synthesize from (synthesize).

What GEO work actually looks like

Monitor. Run a representative prompt set against every major engine on a schedule. Store answers verbatim. Score visibility, share of voice and sentiment against named competitors — per persona and market, because a VP in Berlin gets a different answer than an engineer in Austin.
Act. For every lost answer, find the citations that decide it, then run the play: create the missing comparison page, refresh the decaying docs article, earn the review or community presence. The work is ordinary content and PR work — aimed by citation evidence instead of keyword volume.
Measure. AI answers send real traffic: human click-throughs and agent crawls. Tag them, tie them to GA4 conversions, and report the channel next to paid and organic. That's what turns GEO from a curiosity into a budget line.
