Machine-readable code that tells a crawler what a page is and what each part of it means.
Schema.org vocabulary, usually written as JSON-LD, labels the parts of a page: this is an article, this is its author, this is a question and its answer, this is a defined term.
It does not make content rank, and it does not buy inclusion in an answer. What it does is remove ambiguity, so a crawler does not have to infer structure from your layout. It also powers rich results such as FAQ dropdowns and review stars.
One rule worth keeping: only mark up what is actually on the page. Schema asserting an FAQ that does not exist is a misrepresentation, and Google treats it as one.
