Google's generated summary that appears above the traditional results for many queries, citing a small set of sources.
AI Overviews sit at the top of the results page and answer the query directly, with a handful of cited links. They are the largest single driver of search decoupling for most sites, because they intercept the query at the exact point the user would otherwise have clicked.
The cited sources frequently are not the pages ranking beneath them, which is the detail that surprises teams reviewing their first report. A page can hold position one and not appear in the overview above it.
There is no public API for AI Overviews, so any tool reporting on them is collecting through licensed search data rather than an official feed. Worth asking a vendor how they capture it.
